Wridhiman Saha to undergo Surgery as Shoulder Injury has relapsed

While earlier it was believed that it was a thumb fracture that is keeping Wriddhiman Saha out of 5-test series against England, now it is reported that it is actually a posterosuperior labral tear on his right shoulder that will now require a surgery and a long rehabilitation. Saha has been the 1st choice Wicket Keeper for Indian Team since the retirement of MS Dhoni from test matches in the start of 2015. But the relapse of the shoulder injury will now keep him out of the game for upto 4 months.

He was ruled out of the 3rd test in South Africa in January this year due to a hamstring injury. Later in the month, when he reported in NCA, he complained of pain in his right shoulder. Ultrasound then confirmed a tear in the shoulder. An ultrasound guided  steroid injection was given to him and followed by a rehabilitation program. Palying for SRH in IPL, on May 7th against RCB, he fell on his shoulder and was injured again in right shoulder. A second injection was given to him resulting in him missing 5 IPL games. Later in qualifier match against KKR, he suffered a thumb fracture which kept him out of the test against Afghanistan and it was told that the same injury is keeping him out of England series also.

Anatomy of Shoulder

It is now reported that his thumb has healed completely but shoulder tear has relapsed for the 2nd time. After 3rd steroid injection when his shoulder was not healed properly, he is suggested to go for the surgery for complete rehabilitation of the injury. Surgery is expected to be done by the end of this month in Manchester. Post which the rehabilitation program will start. In first 6 weeks that will follow the surgery, he will not be allowed to do complete movements of the shoulder. After which his rehabilitation program will start in NCA. He will be expected to get fit for India's Test Series against Australia which will start on 6th Dec, 2018.
